A downloadable weather app for Android

About Little Drip

Little Drip is a weather app that you can use for forecasting weather up to 2 weeks in the future, and also up to 1 week in the past (because sometimes it's useful to know what the temperature was yesterday!).

Little Drip is a character in a vague memory I have of an educational video I watched in school about the water cycle. I liked Little Drip a lot and made a little plushie of it at the time, which I don't have any more. But finally, after many years, Little Drip is back again (perhaps it's been traveling through the sea and the clouds all this time) to provide us with its best guess as to what the weather will be in the near future.

Little Drip

Little Drip does NOT include weather warnings (because I couldn't figure out how to do that) - so please refer to official sources for weather warnings for your area if you require them.

Practical Features

  • Hourly temperature and apparent ('feels like') temperature (in celsius or fahrenheit)
  • Hourly wind speed, gust speed (in mph, kmh, m/s, or knots), and wind direction
  • Hourly chance of rain (that's the % chance that some amount of rain will fall somewhere in the location you've searched, NOT the % of the area that will get covered in rain!)
  • Hourly precipitation type (light, medium, heavy rain, snow) + lightning
  • Hourly cloud cover (%)
  • Hourly weather codes (e.g. 'slight drizzle', or 'mainly clear')
  • Moon phase
  • Day summary including temperature and apparent temperature range, wind speed, gust and direction, sunrise and sunset times
  • Global location search + optional link to your map app

Cool Features

  • Cute icons hand-made from plasticine!
  • Spin a cool dial to change the time!
  • Weather data all visible on one screen!
  • No AI! Hand-made art and open-source code!
  • Mostly developed off solar power!

Technical Details

Installation

(Instructions based on my own phone, may vary for your phone but should be similar enough)

  1. Open this page on your android phone.
  2. Download 'LittleDrip.apk' and save it to your phone's Downloads folder.
  3. Once downloaded, either click 'Open' on the notification that appears, or navigate the the file in your Downloads folder and tap the .apk file to open. You may be asked to change your settings to allow your phone to install unknown apps. It's up to you if you're happy to do that, and it is asking you this because I have provided you with the .apk file directly rather than through an app store. If you are comfortable with that then feel free to continue on with the installation instructions.
  4. Click 'Install' when prompted, and then 'Open'.

Troubleshooting

  • If Open-Meteo is down, the app will not be able to access data. You can check the status here to see if this is the problem (look for the status of 'Forecast API')  https://status.open-meteo.com
  • If data looks incorrect, try restarting the app (sometimes too many API requests can slow it down)
  • This was mainly a fun project I made for me and my friends so I'm unlikely to take feature requests or fix bugs unless the app becomes unusable, but the source code is linked above for anyone who would like to change things / add their own features / make their own cool weather app based on this one!
